About the Role

We are looking for an experienced AI Engineer (Backend) to join an innovative engineering team developing AI-powered products and services. You'll play a key role in designing, building and scaling backend systems that support machine learning models, large language models (LLMs) and intelligent automation solutions.

Working closely with AI researchers, data scientists and software engineers, you'll build robust APIs, optimise AI infrastructure and ensure production-ready AI applications are reliable, secure and scalable.

This is a permanent hybrid position based in London, with employees expected to work three days per week in the office, alongside flexible remote working.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services for AI-powered applications.
• Build APIs and microservices that integrate machine learning models and Large Language Models (LLMs).
• Deploy, monitor and optimise AI models in production environments.
• Develop data pipelines for model training, inference and evaluation.
• Build and maintain Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems and AI workflows.
• Work with vector databases, embeddings and semantic search technologies.
• Optimise backend architecture for performance, scalability and reliability.
• Collaborate closely with AI researchers, data scientists and frontend engineers.
• Implement monitoring, logging and observability across AI services.
• Ensure backend systems meet security, compliance and reliability standards.
• Contribute to technical architecture decisions and engineering best practices.

Key Requirements

• Commercial experience as a Backend Engineer, AI Engineer or Software Engineer.
• Strong programming experience with Python.
• Experience building scalable backend applications and RESTful APIs.
• Experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI applications.
• Knowledge of frameworks such as FastAPI, Flask or Django.
• Experience with cloud platforms including AWS, Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Experience using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Strong understanding of SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern software development practices.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Desirable Skills

• Experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex or similar AI orchestration frameworks.
• Knowledge of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures.
• Experience with vector databases such as Pinecone, Weaviate, Milvus or pgvector.
• Experience integrating with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or other foundation model APIs.
• Familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Experience with MLOps and AI model deployment.
• Knowledge of event-driven architectures and microservices.
• Previous experience within a SaaS, AI or technology-focused organisation.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline.
